Welcome

Thank you for the opportunity to represent the people and priorities of Northwest Minnesota at the Capitol.

It has been an honor to serve as your state representative and advocate for our community in St. Paul over the past six years. I am committed to continue working for the families, farmers, schools and businesses of Northwest Minnesota.

Your support ensures that folks in our region continue to have a strong voice at the State Capitol, and I hope I can continue to count on you again this year. I kindly ask for your support on Election Day, Tuesday, November 8th.

Together, we can make a difference!

Sincerely,

debsig

Meet Deb

Deb was born and raised south of Crookston where her parents still reside on the family farm.

She graduated from Crookston Public Schools and attended Concordia College.

Deb married local farmer, Lonn Kiel, and they have been together for 39 years. Lonn and Deb are both partners in life and on their family farm. They are blessed with 4 children and 13 grandchildren.

Deb believes that communities are strengthened by great people and caring neighbors, and she is an active volunteer in her community. She attends Our Savior’s Lutheran Church where she sings in the choir and teaches Sunday school. She also previously served as the youth group leader and taught music at Our Saviors’ Lutheran school. Additionally, Deb had the privilege of working with the knowledge bowl group at Crookston Public schools and is on the SPOKES group for the Villa St. Vincent Foundation. She also served 7 years on the Crookston School Board.

Deb has served as the state representative for District 1B since 2010 and hopes to continue representing the people and priorities of Northwest Minnesota at the Capitol.

Deb believes…

  • Minnesota state government should not grow faster than family budgets
  • every life is important and we should protect our unborn children, the elderly and the vulnerable from beginning to end of life
  • in protecting our Second Amendment rights
  • in Individual responsibility, hard work and self-reliance
  • in supporting agriculture to build a strong state economy
  • that every Minnesota child deserves a world-class education

Standing Up for Students and Schools

Deb believes every child deserves a world-class education. That’s why over the past two years she advocated for our students and schools, helping secure $525 million in new funding for Minnesota schools.

She also supported meaningful reforms to improve student learning and tackle Greater Minnesota’s critical teacher shortage. Finally, Deb voted to provide funding for facilities maintenance which will help reduce funding disparities in rural school districts and help finance the preservation of school buildings.

Investing in Agriculture

As Vice-Chair of the House Agriculture Finance Committee, Deb worked tirelessly for farmers and ranchers in our community. Thanks to her work in the House, agriculture investments were increased by over 40 percent from last biennium.

Deb also supported investments for animal disease prevention, prioritized ag education and protected farmers from a one-size-fits-all, land-grabbing water buffer mandate proposed by the governor.

Home

Prioritizing Rural Roads and Bridges

Deb helped secure $12.5 million in new transportation funding for small city roads and bridges.

She also defeated the largest gas tax increase in state history and blocked funding for an expensive new train in Minneapolis that costs $123 million per mile to build.

Home

Improving Aging Minnesotans’ Quality of Life

Thanks to Deb’s efforts, nursing homes saw a $138 million investment that will not only provide stable funding for our rural nursing homes, but also raise wages for hardworking caregivers as well.

Additionally, Deb spearheaded the Alzheimer’s Research and Support Act to fund research for the prevention, treatment and cure of Alzheimer’s disease.

Advocating for Taxpayers

Deb is a vocal proponent of meaningful tax relief for the hardworking taxpayers of our state.

She helped successfully secure tax relief for more than 18,000 Minnesota veterans who will no longer have their military retirement benefits subject to state income tax.

Deb also supported bipartisan tax legislation that included more than half a billion in ongoing and permanent tax relief to families, farmers, small businesses, veterans and college graduates this year. Unfortunately, the governor vetoed the bill making it the most bipartisan tax bill to be vetoed in thirty years.

Fighting for Us

Deb brought our priorities to the Capitol, helping secure more than $100 million in broadband investments for underserved communities, authoring legislation to keep our border communities competitive, championing the rights of the unborn and strengthening your Second Amendment rights including reciprocity for conceal and carry permits with North Dakota.

Deb also supported bipartisan tax legislation that included more than half a billion in ongoing and permanent tax relief to families, farmers, small businesses, veterans and college graduates this year.
